Movement No. 10 reflects his engagement with the European modernist circles he encountered while living in Berlin. The composition presents a simplified, geometric arrangement of a pear resting upon a dark, circular platter, which is itself placed atop a draped white cloth.

The artist employs a restricted palette of muted greys, browns, and off-whites, allowing the subtle tonal shifts to define the volume of the objects. Rather than pursuing photographic accuracy, Hartley reduces the subject matter to its essential shapes. The pear is rendered with soft, rounded contours, contrasting with the sharp, angular folds of the fabric and the stark circularity of the plate. This approach demonstrates his interest in the structural qualities of objects, a common preoccupation among artists of the era who sought to move beyond traditional representation.

The background is divided into two distinct horizontal planes, creating a sense of shallow space that keeps the focus firmly on the central arrangement. The brushwork is deliberate and matte, lacking the glossy finish often associated with academic painting. This choice of texture reinforces the physical presence of the paint on the canvas. By isolating these everyday items, Hartley invites the viewer to consider the relationship between form, colour, and spatial organisation. This piece is representative of his ability to synthesise European influences, such as Cubism and German Expressionism, into a distinct personal style that prioritised clarity and formal rigour over narrative content.

You might also like

Echelonnement desaxe - Sophie Taeuber-Arp — Sophie Taeuber-Arp
The Kiss - Max Ernst — Max Ernst

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Movement-No_Poster_CompositorV1_1790888176193.jpg?v=1790888885
