lijst-van-rug-arm-en-bilspieren-in-duits-en-latijn-reijer-stolk
Lijst van rug-, arm- en bilspieren in Duits en Latijn - Reijer Stolk

A modernist woodcut anatomical chart by Reijer Stolk, listing human muscles in German and Latin with clear, geometric typography.

This woodcut print by the Dutch artist Reijer Stolk presents a systematic anatomical catalogue of human musculature. The composition is organised into distinct sections, each categorised by the specific region of the body, such as the neck, chest, abdomen, and limbs. Stolk employs a stark, monochromatic aesthetic, utilising bold black blocks to separate the anatomical groupings, which provides a clear visual hierarchy for the viewer.

The text is presented in a dual-column format, listing the German common names for the muscles alongside their corresponding Latin scientific terminology. The typography is geometric and utilitarian, reflecting the influence of early twentieth-century modernist design principles. By stripping away the illustrative detail often found in traditional medical diagrams, Stolk focuses on the clarity of information and the structural arrangement of the human form.

Reijer Stolk was a versatile artist, known for his contributions to graphic design and printmaking during the interwar period. His work often bridged the gap between fine art and functional communication. This particular piece demonstrates his interest in the intersection of science and visual order. The print serves as a document of anatomical study, rendered with the precision characteristic of his woodcut technique. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper substrate creates a graphic quality that is both informative and visually arresting. It is a piece that appeals to those interested in the history of medical illustration, typography, and the clean lines of early modern graphic design.

You might also like

Dwarsdoorsnede baarmoeder - Lucas Kilian — Lucas Kilian
Anatomical Study of the Human Throat (Tab.
