The text relates to the Noh play Eguchi, which draws upon classical Japanese literature and Buddhist themes. The visual character of the work is defined by the fluid, cursive script known as kana, which flows vertically across the page. The characters exhibit a rhythmic quality, with varying line weights that suggest the movement of a brush.

The background features subtle, printed woodgrain patterns, a technique often employed in these editions to provide a tactile quality to the paper. This aesthetic choice reflects the period interest in combining literary content with refined, understated visual design. The layout is sparse, allowing the calligraphic forms to occupy the space with a sense of balance and intentionality.

Historically, these libretti are associated with the artistic circle of Hon'ami Kōetsu, a figure known for his contributions to calligraphy, ceramics, and lacquerware. While the specific hand behind this page remains unidentified, the style aligns with the Kokatsuji-ban, or early movable-type editions, which were produced in Kyoto. These works represent a shift in the dissemination of literature, moving from hand-copied manuscripts to printed volumes while maintaining the visual elegance of traditional calligraphy. The print captures the intersection of performance art and book production, offering a glimpse into the literary culture of the early Edo period. The preservation of these characters provides insight into the evolution of Japanese script and the appreciation for the written word as a form of visual art.

You might also like

The actor Sakata Hangoro III as Fujikawa Mizuemon - Tōshūsai Sharaku — Sharaku
Love Letter (Kesobumi) - Kajita Hanko — Kajita Hanko

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Libretto-for-the-Noh-Play-Eguchi_Poster_CompositorV1_1791171355090.jpg?v=1791172069
