The composition depicts a group of children swimming and playing near a boat, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of the period. The scene captures a lighthearted moment, with one child poised on the edge of a small vessel, ready to dive into the water, while others splash nearby. In the background, a simple boat with a mast sits on the water, framed by a gentle shoreline and sparse vegetation.

Stella, a member of the prominent Stella family of artists, produced works that often reflected the classical sensibilities of the era. The etching includes a poetic inscription in French below the image, which adds a narrative layer to the visual representation. The text describes the children cooling themselves in the water after their games, a common theme in seventeenth-century genre prints that sought to depict everyday life with a touch of pastoral charm. The technical execution shows a mastery of cross-hatching to create depth in the water and texture on the figures, demonstrating the artist's skill in the medium of printmaking. The work is presented here as a fine art print, preserving the original character of the etching, including the plate marks and the aged paper tone. It offers a glimpse into the artistic output of a female engraver whose contributions were significant within the context of the French Baroque period. The print is suitable for those interested in historical engraving techniques and the depiction of childhood in early modern European art.

You might also like

Le Sabot - Claudine Stella by Claudine Bouzonnet-Stella
Infancy by Abraham Bosse

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Le-Bain_Poster_CompositorV1_1791948948906.jpg?v=1791949715
