landscape-with-fisherman-qi-zhijia
Landscape with Fisherman - Qi Zhijia

A refined ink wash fan painting by the 17th-century artist Qi Zhijia, depicting a solitary fisherman in a tranquil, atmospheric setting.

This fan painting by Qi Zhijia (1624-1711) demonstrates the refined brushwork characteristic of the scholar-official tradition during the early Qing Dynasty. The composition is contained within the fan format, a popular medium for literati artists to express personal style and poetic sensibility. Qi Zhijia, a native of Shanyin, Zhejiang province, was known for his mastery of ink wash techniques, which allowed for subtle gradations of tone and texture.

The scene depicts a solitary fisherman in a small boat, positioned near a cluster of trees and rock formations. The artist employs varying ink densities to define the foliage and the rugged terrain, creating a sense of depth despite the limited space. The application of ink on the gold-flecked paper provides a luminous quality, where the metallic ground interacts with the monochrome washes to suggest light reflecting off the water. The brushstrokes are deliberate and rhythmic, capturing the essence of the natural elements rather than a literal representation.

In the lower right corner, the artist has included a calligraphic inscription and a red seal, which serve as both a signature and a formal element of the overall design. The balance between the empty space and the ink-heavy areas is typical of the period, reflecting a philosophy that values restraint and suggestion. This work offers a glimpse into the private artistic practices of the literati, who often produced such pieces for friends or personal enjoyment. The fan format itself requires the viewer to engage with the work in a physical manner, as the curvature of the paper influences the perception of the spatial arrangement. This print captures the delicate nuances of the original ink work, preserving the texture of the paper and the fluidity of the brushstrokes.

You might also like

Fisherman's Lodge at Mount Xisai - Li Jie — Li Jie
Album of Landscapes: Leaf 4 - Wang Gai — Wang Gai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Landscape-with-Fisherman_Poster_CompositorV1_1790933758786.jpg?v=1790934825
