hotei-jonan-etetsu
Hotei - Jonan Etetsu

A traditional ink painting of the Zen figure Hotei by the monk-painter Jonan Etetsu, featuring fluid brushwork and calligraphic inscription.

This ink painting depicts Hotei, the eccentric Zen figure often associated with contentment and abundance. Jonan Etetsu, a monk-painter active during the Muromachi period, employs a style characteristic of the period's ink traditions. The figure of Hotei is rendered with economical, fluid brushwork, capturing his characteristic corpulence and jovial expression. He carries his signature cloth sack, which contains his few worldly possessions, and holds a string of prayer beads.

The upper portion of the work features a calligraphic inscription. This text provides context for the figure, linking the visual representation to the philosophical traditions of Zen Buddhism. The interplay between the brush-drawn image and the written characters is a hallmark of this genre, where the economy of line serves to communicate spiritual concepts rather than realistic portraiture.

The composition is balanced, with the weight of the figure at the bottom providing a stable base for the vertical orientation of the scroll. The ink tones are muted, reflecting the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in simplicity and the passage of time. The paper shows signs of age, which contributes to the overall character of the piece. This work is an example of the monk-painter tradition, where art is produced as a form of spiritual practice. The focus remains on the essential form of the subject, stripping away unnecessary detail to reveal the character of the Zen master. The brushwork is deliberate, showing the confidence of a practitioner trained in the discipline of calligraphy. This print captures the texture and tonal variations of the original ink, preserving the historical aesthetic of the Muromachi period.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Hotei - Kenkō Shōkei — Kenkō Shōkei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Hotei_Poster_CompositorV1_1791261521770.jpg?v=1791262175
