flowers-and-butterflies-ma-quan
Flowers and Butterflies - Ma Quan

A delicate Qing Dynasty handscroll by Ma Quan, featuring a central peony surrounded by a variety of butterflies rendered in ink and colour on silk.

Ma Quan, a notable female painter of the Qing Dynasty, produced this handscroll depicting a delicate assembly of butterflies surrounding a central peony bloom. The work belongs to the bird-and-flower genre, a category of Chinese painting that focuses on the observation of natural phenomena. Ma Quan was known for her meticulous brushwork and her ability to capture the ephemeral nature of her subjects.

The composition is arranged across a horizontal plane, typical of the handscroll format, which allows the viewer to experience the scene as a continuous progression. The butterflies are rendered with varying degrees of opacity and detail, creating a sense of movement as they hover around the floral centrepiece. The artist employs a soft colour palette, relying on subtle washes of ink and pigment to define the wings of the insects and the soft petals of the flower. The background remains largely unadorned, which directs the focus entirely to the interaction between the flora and the fauna.

This piece demonstrates the technical precision associated with the literati tradition, where the artist sought to convey the spirit of the subject rather than a purely photographic representation. The use of silk as a medium provides a smooth surface that enhances the fluidity of the ink lines. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, prioritising balance, harmony, and a quiet observation of the natural world. By isolating these elements against a neutral ground, Ma Quan creates a sense of space that invites close inspection of the individual markings on the butterfly wings and the structure of the peony. The result is a study in grace and restraint, characteristic of the artist's contribution to the painting traditions of the early eighteenth century.

You might also like

Paulownias and Chrysanthemums - Sakai Hōitsu — Sakai Hōitsu
Flowers and Goldfish - Sō Shizan — Sō Shizan

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Flowers-and-Butterflies_Poster_CompositorV1_1790903516226.jpg?v=1790905970
