The work depicts two figures in a small boat, silhouetted against the light of a full moon. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, textured forms of the boat and the luminous reflection of the moon upon the water. Millet uses the etching medium to create a sense of atmosphere, employing fine, horizontal lines to suggest the movement of the sea and the hazy quality of the night air.

Unlike his earlier, more detailed depictions of rural labour, this work focuses on the quiet, solitary nature of the fishermen. The figures are reduced to dark shapes, their specific features obscured by the low light. This approach directs the viewer to the mood of the scene rather than the individual identities of the subjects. The horizontal orientation of the lines across the plate creates a rhythmic quality, drawing the eye across the surface of the water toward the moon.

This print demonstrates Millet's technical skill in printmaking, a practice he pursued alongside his painting. By limiting the palette to shades of brown and black, he achieves a tonal depth that mimics the effects of oil paint. The work captures a moment of stillness, reflecting the artist's interest in the daily lives of those who worked close to nature. It remains a clear example of his ability to convey human presence within a vast, natural environment through minimal visual information. The print is a study in light and shadow, showing the artist's capacity to evoke a specific time of day and a particular emotional state through the careful application of ink and line.

You might also like

The Barges by Charles-Francois Daubigny
Catnip Island, Near Greenwich, CT by David Johnson

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Fishermen_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117690918.jpg?v=1792140978
