The figure wears a tall, structured headpiece and a layered kimono featuring a geometric hemp-leaf pattern, known as asanoha, contrasted against a bold red under-garment. The dancer holds a partially open folding fan, while a sword is tucked into the obi at the waist, suggesting a theatrical role or a specific dance performance. The composition is balanced by the inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper portion of the print, which provides context or poetic commentary typical of the surimono genre.

Oishi Matora was a student of the artist Katsukawa Shuntei and was active during the early nineteenth century. His work often reflects the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e school, focusing on the refined depiction of figures from the theatre and literary circles. The print employs a clean, linear approach, with the artist using precise outlines to define the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the dancer. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, muted reds, and earthy tones to maintain a sense of harmony across the page. The negative space surrounding the figure allows the viewer to focus on the posture and the specific details of the costume. This piece is an example of the technical skill involved in Edo-period printmaking, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of high precision and aesthetic clarity. The inclusion of the artist's seal and the calligraphic inscriptions adds a layer of historical authenticity, linking the visual image to the cultural practices of the time.

You might also like

Evening Glow at Ryogoku Bridge - Keisai Eisen — Keisai Eisen
Bamboo Quay by Kyōbashi Bridge - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Dancer_Poster_CompositorV1_1791348462139.jpg?v=1791350156
