The painting captures a rural scene through the lens of her characteristic expressionist style, prioritising subjective emotional response over objective representation. Stern employs a bold, gestural application of paint, using thick brushstrokes to define the structure of the trees and the winding path.

The composition is framed by a large, dominant tree trunk in the foreground, which acts as a visual anchor. This framing device draws the viewer into the scene, leading the eye towards the small dwelling nestled against the hillside. Her palette is composed of warm ochres, terracotta tones, and cool greens, reflecting the sun-drenched environment of the island. The forms are simplified and flattened, a technique that allows the texture of the paint to take precedence over fine detail.

Stern spent significant periods of her life travelling, and these journeys provided the primary subject matter for her paintings. Her work from the 1930s often displays a fascination with the exotic, though she consistently applied her own distinct stylistic vocabulary to these subjects. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, she creates a sense of movement within the static rural environment. The painting avoids rigid perspective, opting instead for a rhythmic arrangement of shapes and colours that convey the atmosphere of the location. This piece serves as an example of her ability to translate the sensory experience of a place into a cohesive visual language, balancing the raw energy of her brushwork with a structured approach to composition.

You might also like

Path in the Country by Charles Angrand
Pont sur la Loue à Moutier by Auguste Herbin

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Country-Road-Madeira_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115410315.jpg?v=1792136650
