composition-albert-gleizes
Composition - Albert Gleizes

A geometric abstract work by French Cubist Albert Gleizes, featuring a rhythmic arrangement of overlapping planes and patterned forms.

Albert Gleizes was a central figure in the development of Cubism, both as a painter and a theorist. This work, titled Composition, reflects his rigorous approach to the geometric fragmentation of space. Unlike the earlier, more analytical phases of the movement, this piece demonstrates the shift towards a flatter, more decorative arrangement of forms that occupied his practice during the post-war period.

The composition relies on a series of overlapping planes and angular shapes that suggest a structural logic rather than a direct representation of a subject. Gleizes employs a restricted palette, focusing on the interplay between light and dark values to create a sense of depth within a two-dimensional frame. The inclusion of dotted patterns within specific segments introduces a rhythmic quality, breaking the severity of the solid blocks of colour. This technique directs the viewer's eye across the surface, encouraging an analysis of the relationship between the various geometric elements.

Throughout his career, Gleizes sought to reconcile the intellectual demands of Cubism with a sense of spiritual or rhythmic order. His work often moves away from the depiction of objects, favouring instead the creation of autonomous pictorial structures. This particular painting is representative of his mature style, where the balance of mass and void is carefully calibrated. The work avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a rhythmic distribution of shapes that creates a cohesive visual experience. It is a clear example of the artist's pursuit of a universal language of form, stripped of extraneous detail and focused on the fundamental mechanics of the painted surface.

You might also like

Divergerende stralen / Gaten-ets (één gat) by Constant Nieuwenhuys
Contrast of Forms by Fernand Léger
More by Albert Gleizes →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Composition_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115433599.jpg?v=1792136731
