The composition is divided across two panels, creating a narrative flow between the subject and the artist. On the left, a woman adjusts her hair, assisted by a child, while on the right, a painter sits at a low stool, observing his subject and applying pigment to a small portrait panel. The gold leaf ground provides a reflective surface that unifies the figures, while the muted tones of the clothing contrast with the metallic shimmer of the background.

Miwa Zaiei, a painter active during the early eighteenth century, often engaged with themes derived from Chinese subjects, a common practice among Japanese artists of the era who looked to continental traditions for inspiration. The figures are rendered with precise, controlled lines, typical of the period's focus on clarity and decorative balance. The painter's posture, leaning forward to capture the likeness of the woman, suggests a moment of concentrated observation. The inclusion of the child adds a domestic element to the scene, grounding the professional activity of the portraitist in a recognisable human context.

The use of gold leaf, applied in a grid-like pattern, serves to flatten the pictorial space, drawing attention to the silhouettes and the interaction between the characters. The border, featuring a repeating pattern, frames the central action, reinforcing the screen's function as both a functional room divider and a decorative object. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the subtle ageing of the pigments, offering a view into the aesthetic priorities of the Japanese art world during the early Edo period.

You might also like

Thirty Six Immortal Poets (Sanjūrokkasen) - Katsukawa Shunshō — Katsukawa Shunshō
Collected Thirty-six Kyōka Poets - Totoya Hokkei — Hokkei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Chinese-Portrait-Painter_Poster_CompositorV1_1790933057343.jpg?v=1790933890
