cabbage-ma-shida
Cabbage - Ma Shida

A traditional ink-wash study of a cabbage plant, rendered with delicate tonal variations on silk.

This ink on silk hanging scroll by Ma Shida presents a study of a cabbage plant. The composition focuses on the vertical growth of the vegetable, with the leaves extending upwards in a series of layered, translucent washes. The artist employs the ink-wash technique to suggest the texture and weight of the foliage, balancing darker, saturated tones with lighter, diluted areas to create a sense of volume.

The work adheres to the traditions of Chinese literati painting, where humble subjects are elevated through precise brushwork and careful observation. The cabbage, often associated with prosperity and simplicity in Chinese culture, is rendered here with a focus on the natural structure of the plant. The base of the cabbage is anchored by subtle, fine-line details of the root system and surrounding ground cover, providing a contrast to the broader, sweeping strokes used for the leaves.

The background remains largely unadorned, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the tonal variations within the ink. The artist's signature and red seals are positioned in the upper right quadrant, maintaining the balance of the vertical format. This piece demonstrates a mastery of ink control, where the varying density of the pigment defines the form without the need for rigid outlines. The muted colour palette, dominated by shades of sepia and charcoal, reflects the aged condition of the silk support, which adds a layer of historical character to the image. This print captures the quiet observation inherent in the original scroll, offering a study in form and ink application that remains relevant to the appreciation of East Asian aesthetic traditions.

You might also like

Birds on a Flowering Branch - Watanabe Seitei — Watanabe Shōtei
Glass-Wares with Plum Blossoms - Hachifusa Shūri — Hachifusa Shūri

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Cabbage_Poster_CompositorV1_1790989348838.jpg?v=1790990447
