The work depicts a pastoral scene, featuring a young boy riding a water buffalo through a quiet, autumnal setting. The artist employs a delicate brush technique to render the foliage and the gentle contours of the distant hills, which fade into a soft, atmospheric wash. This treatment of space is characteristic of the period, where the balance between ink-heavy foreground elements and lighter, misty backgrounds creates a sense of depth and stillness.

The composition is contained within a circular format, typical of fan paintings from the era. The trees, rendered with fine, controlled lines, frame the central figures, while the muted colour palette reflects the seasonal transition of autumn. The presence of red seals on the silk indicates the work's history within imperial or private collections, a common feature for paintings of this provenance. Yan Ciping, the son of the painter Yan Yue, was known for his ability to capture rural life with a refined, academic sensibility. His work often focuses on the interaction between human figures and the natural world, presented here with a focus on quiet observation rather than dramatic action.

The ink work on the buffalo and the boy shows a precise, economical use of line, typical of the Southern Song court style. The surrounding terrain is suggested through subtle washes, allowing the viewer to perceive the vastness of the environment despite the limited scale of the fan. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the twelfth-century Chinese court, where the depiction of rural life was elevated through technical mastery and a restrained, contemplative approach to the natural world.

You might also like

Tao Yuanming Enjoying Chrysanthemums - Du Jin — Du Jin
Autumn Landscape with Egrets and Ducks - Lü Ji — Lü Ji

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Buffalo-and-Boy-in-Autumnal-Landscape_Poster_CompositorV1_1790822223642.jpg?v=1790823678
