Meline

A fine etching depicting a boy protecting a rabbit from a greyhound, based on a sculpture by Eugène Simonis.

This etching depicts a sculptural composition featuring a young boy seated upon a rock, shielding a small rabbit within his arms. A greyhound stands beside him, its gaze fixed upward toward the boy and the hidden animal. The work is a reproduction of a sculpture by the Belgian artist Eugène Simonis, executed by the engraver J.P. Meline at the École Royale de Gravure in Brussels.

The print demonstrates the technical precision associated with nineteenth-century academic engraving. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the anatomical structure of the figures and the texture of the stone base. The composition focuses on the narrative tension between the three subjects, capturing a moment of protective instinct. The greyhound, lean and alert, contrasts with the stillness of the seated youth. The background remains sparse, directing the viewer's attention to the sculptural form and the interaction between the figures.

As a product of the Brussels school of engraving, this piece reflects the period's interest in translating three-dimensional sculptural works into two-dimensional graphic media. The clear, clean lines and the balanced arrangement of the figures are characteristic of the Neoclassical influence prevalent in European art academies during this era. The print serves as a record of the original sculpture, documenting the pose and expression intended by Simonis. It is a study in form and narrative, presented with the clarity typical of professional engraving practices of the time.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
A Grecian Lovely - John William Godward — John William Godward

J.P.
