These works were produced with high-quality materials, including metallic pigments and embossing, to demonstrate the technical skill of the carver and printer.

The composition presents a scholarly still life, featuring a tiered wooden bookcase laden with stacks of paper, writing brushes, and scrolls. A small potted Adonis plant sits atop a delicate stand, accompanied by a small figurine. The background incorporates a stylised, circular motif reminiscent of a full moon, set against a wave pattern that adds a sense of movement to the otherwise static arrangement of objects. The inclusion of calligraphic text suggests this print was associated with a poetry circle, where the visual imagery complemented the literary content.

Gakutei was a pupil of Hokusai and became known for his refined approach to surimono. His work often features precise lines and a sophisticated use of colour, reflecting the tastes of the educated urban class. The attention to the texture of the wood grain on the bookcase and the subtle application of metallic ink on the moon motif demonstrate the level of craftsmanship expected in these private commissions. The print functions as a celebration of the intellectual life, focusing on the tools of the poet and scholar. It remains a clear representation of the aesthetic values prevalent in early nineteenth-century Japanese print culture, where the marriage of poetry and visual art formed a central part of social and artistic exchange.

You might also like

Wine Pot and Cup by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai
History of Kamakura by Kubo Shunman

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Bookcase-with-Writing-Utensils-Books-and-Potted-Adonis_Poster_CompositorV1_1791940047188.jpg?v=1791948590
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/de/products/bookcase-with-writing-utensils-books-and-potted-adonis-yashima-gakutei
