The composition focuses on a modest farmhouse with a thatched roof, surrounded by trees and open ground. In the foreground, a small group of chickens wanders near a stream, while a goat stands near the structure. The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the building materials, the foliage, and the uneven terrain.

Pérignon was a French painter and engraver who frequently turned his attention to pastoral subjects. His work often reflects the 18th-century interest in the simplicity of country life, a theme that remained popular throughout the period. The etching demonstrates a clear command of line, using varying densities of strokes to create depth and shadow without the need for tonal washes. The inclusion of the cart and the small figures adds a sense of human presence to the scene, grounding the image in a specific, albeit humble, reality.

The print is executed with precision, characteristic of the period's printmaking traditions. The sky is rendered with horizontal lines, providing a contrast to the more chaotic, organic marks used for the vegetation and the thatched roof. This work is part of a broader tradition of French etching that sought to elevate everyday rural life into a subject worthy of artistic attention. The balance between the architectural elements and the natural surroundings creates a harmonious view, typical of the artist's approach to genre scenes. This museum-grade print captures the fine details of the original plate, preserving the character of the artist's hand and the specific qualities of the etching medium.

You might also like

Apotheosis of Hercules - Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo — Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo
Herders in a Landscape - Jacques-Philippe Le Bas — Jacques-Philippe Le Bas

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Boerderij-met-kippen-en-geiten_Poster_CompositorV1_1790856796425.jpg?v=1790857312
