The composition rejects traditional perspective, favouring a flattened, raw aesthetic that aligns with his interest in Art Brut. The figure in the foreground is rendered with simplified, almost childlike lines, while the camel appears as a schematic silhouette against the desert floor. Dubuffet employs a palette dominated by ochre, orange, and deep blue, creating a stark contrast that mimics the harsh light of the desert environment.

His technique here involves thick application of paint and unrefined brushwork, which serves to distance the image from academic conventions. By stripping away the polish of traditional portraiture and animal studies, Dubuffet focuses on the immediacy of the encounter. The figure and the animal exist in a space that feels both personal and detached. This piece reflects his broader rejection of cultural refinement in favour of what he termed the raw, unmediated expression of the human condition. The lack of depth and the deliberate crudeness of the forms are not accidental, but rather a calculated effort to capture a sense of authenticity that he believed was absent from contemporary European art. The work remains a clear example of his mid-career experimentation with texture and primitive form, providing a window into his fascination with non-Western visual languages and the untutored creative impulse.

You might also like

The Enthusiast by Emil Nolde
Figures from a Carnival by André Derain
Jean Dubuffet artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Arab-camel-saddled_Poster_CompositorV1_1792118181494.jpg?v=1792141895
