This work demonstrates his move toward a more disciplined, structural approach to composition during the First World War. The painting features a circular dish of fruit perched atop a tall, slender pedestal table. The perspective is flattened, pushing the objects toward the surface of the canvas.

Matisse employs a bold, non-naturalistic colour palette. The background is a flat, cool green, which contrasts with the warm, saturated tones of the fruit. The apples are rendered in shades of red, yellow, and orange, contained within a golden-yellow dish. The table base is a striking magenta, providing a vertical anchor to the circular forms above.

Unlike his earlier, more spontaneous works, this painting shows a deliberate arrangement of geometric shapes. The artist uses heavy, dark outlines to define the forms, separating the fruit from the dish and the dish from the surrounding space. The brushwork is controlled, focusing on the interaction of colour planes rather than the texture of the objects themselves.

This piece reflects the artist's interest in the decorative potential of the canvas. By reducing the still life to its essential components, Matisse creates a balance between the representational subject and the abstract arrangement of colour. The composition is stark, yet it maintains a sense of harmony through the careful placement of circular and vertical elements. It is a clear example of his ability to simplify complex visual information into a coherent, graphic statement.

You might also like

Still Life (Sanseveria and Jar) by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff
Fruit, Knife and Napkin by Albert Marquet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Apples-on-a-Table-Green-Background_Poster_CompositorV1_1791927133127.jpg?v=1791940853
