This woodblock print captures a quiet moment on the Sumida River, a frequent subject for artists of the Edo period. The composition features two women aboard a small ferry, their forms rendered with the elongated proportions that define Kiyonaga's mature style. One woman stands, looking towards the distance, while the other sits, holding a fan. Their kimonos are decorated with subtle patterns, demonstrating the artist's attention to textile detail.

The background provides a sense of place, with the river stretching towards a distant bank. Small boats are visible on the water, adding depth to the scene. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the garments and the gentle ripples of the water. Kiyonaga's approach to colour is restrained, relying on soft tones that complement the atmospheric quality of the river setting. The print reflects the leisure activities of the urban population in Edo, where outings to the river were common.

Kiyonaga's work is often associated with the golden age of the colour woodblock print. His ability to integrate figures into their environment, rather than placing them against a flat background, distinguishes his output from many of his contemporaries. This print is an example of his skill in balancing human subjects with the natural world. The composition remains balanced, with the boat providing a clear base for the figures. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the late 18th century, capturing the fashion and social customs of the time through a refined lens.

You might also like

Yugasan in Bizan Province - Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
Throwing the Shuttle - Suzuki Harunobu — Suzuki Harunobu

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/A-Ferry-on-the-Sumida-River_Poster_CompositorV1_1790914130229.jpg?v=1790914623
