The composition follows the traditional literati style, which prioritises the expression of the artist's inner state through brushwork and ink wash techniques. The verticality of the craggy peaks provides a sense of scale, contrasting with the quiet, human-scaled dwellings nestled among the trees at the base of the mountains.

Taizan employs a variety of brush strokes to define the textures of the rocks, the foliage of the pines, and the gentle ripples of the water. The ink application ranges from deep, saturated blacks to delicate, diluted washes, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. The autumnal season is suggested through the subtle application of light colour, which complements the monochrome ink work without overwhelming the composition. The inclusion of small figures within the architecture invites the viewer to imagine the quiet, contemplative life of the scholar-recluse, a common theme in East Asian painting that celebrates withdrawal from the bustle of public life.

As a two-panel screen, the work maintains a balance between the solid, grounded forms of the mountains and the expansive, open space of the lake. The calligraphic quality of the brushwork is evident in the rendering of the tree branches and the distant mountain contours, reflecting Taizan's mastery of the literati tradition. This print preserves the original paper texture and the subtle tonal shifts of the ink, offering a clear view of the artist's technical precision. It is a work that rewards close observation, revealing the rhythmic interplay between solid form and empty space that defines the Bunjinga aesthetic.

You might also like

Two Views from the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers - Kantei — Kantei
Record of a haiku exchange on kaishi writing paper - Matsuo Bashō — Matsuo Bashō

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/At-leisure-in-a-lakeside-grove-in-autumn_Poster_CompositorV1_1791524512765.jpg?v=1791525017
the-deep-green-of-summer-mountains-hine-taizan
The Deep Green of Summer Mountains - Hine Taizan

A traditional Bunjinga ink and colour painting by Hine Taizan, depicting a serene mountain retreat within a lush, atmospheric forest setting.

Hine Taizan, a prominent figure in the late Edo period Bunjinga tradition, produced this hanging scroll using ink and light colour on silk. The composition follows the conventions of the literati school, which sought to capture the spirit of a scene rather than its exact physical appearance. The work depicts a secluded mountain retreat, where the architecture is integrated into the natural topography of craggy peaks and dense pine forests. A narrow stream winds through the foreground, providing a path for the eye to travel into the distance, where a small structure sits nestled against the slope.

Taizan employs a calligraphic brush technique to define the textures of the rock faces and the foliage of the trees. The ink washes are applied with restraint, allowing the natural tone of the silk to represent the atmosphere of the mountain air. The inclusion of figures in the lower section provides a sense of scale, suggesting the presence of scholars or travellers seeking refuge from the world. The work reflects the Bunjinga interest in Chinese landscape traditions, adapted through a Japanese aesthetic lens. The balance between empty space and detailed brushwork creates a sense of quietude. This piece is an example of the artist's mature style, where the application of ink is both precise and fluid, demonstrating a mastery of the brush that was characteristic of the literati painters of the nineteenth century. The muted palette, dominated by ink tones with subtle hints of colour, maintains a focus on the structural integrity of the mountain forms and the rhythmic quality of the trees.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Mountains and Ravine - Suzuki Fuyō — Suzuki Fuyō

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Deep-Green-of-Summer-Mountains_Poster_CompositorV1_1791679351808.jpg?v=1791679547
